KIOS Director Elisa Mikkola and Project Coordinator Sari Naskinen visited Rwanda, Burundi and DRC 9-21 October 2007. The aim of the trip was to get acquainted with local human rights organisations and to assess the possibilities for KIOS work in the Great Lakes region. The three countries are new focus areas for KIOS, and the objective is to expand the work of KIOS in the Great Lakes region.
KIOS team met over 50 local organisations during the trip. The discussions revolved around the work of the organisations and the general human rights situation in the countries. KIOS organized general informational meetings about KIOS funding for organisations.
“We met several professional organisations, that do important human rights work in a difficult environment”, Director Mikkola tells. “We hope to keep in contact with the organisations we met, and we believe KIOS has a good chance of starting partnership with organisations from the region.”
